What gem that Paul Bowles quote is. I never read the book but I loved the movie, The Sheltering Sky - that quote, and some other favorites of mine are from it. Thoughts that keep friends and lovers grounded and grateful.

It is eerie how similar our restless minds think. Did the worrying begin at the moment we realized we had lives other than our own to take care of? At that very instant, did the carefree nature of our youth begin to slowly transfer from us to our babies via the miraculous vehicle of nurishment brought to life inside of us for the very first time? Was I ever really carefree?

One day some years back Soul Daddy watched in amazement as Mimi was crawling all over me, somersaulting in my lap, restlessly trying to find just the right groove. I looked at him and said, "She's trying to get back inside."

Aren't we all?

When I'm feeling like my little people years are speeding by me faster than I want, I try to remember that all the joy and amazement and beauty and heartache that comes with nurturing them when they are young will not go away with age. We "present" mothers will always be present, and as my wise mother said, "There is nothing is better than enjoying the company of your adult children." We are not losing years - we are continually turning corners and peering around bends only to be surprised by all the wonder still to come. A little bit of hope mixed with a dash of faith -- what a beautiful thing.

I love you Mama!
